The Free Soul Guide to: Managing stress at Christmas

Life can be stressful at the best of times, when you add Christmas into the mix it can easily seem like too much - too much shopping, spending, socialising and even drinking. Whilst we’re not promising to make your season totally stress-free, we’re breaking down some of the ways you can look after your wellness - physically and mentally - to stress a little less at this time of year…

Keep a few small constants in your routine

Many of us rely on our routine to feel good. Whether it brings productivity, familiarity or a feeling of being grounded and secure, without our small daily rituals, we can knock our whole day out of sorts. Throughout the festive season as we commit to more Christmas parties and social occasions, it’s our ‘me-time’ that we can begin to sacrifice. Those small constants that allow time for yourself, can sometimes have the biggest impact on how we feel for the rest of the day. Throughout the festive season it can be helpful to choose a few non-negotiables to stick to religiously - whether it’s a morning walk, 10 minutes of meditation, or even something as simple as getting up at the same time each day.

Take the pressure off yourself

If the festive season brings with it feelings of exhaustion and overwhelm, you’re not alone. Christmas may seem like a time for joy, but it’s not always the case for everyone. So there’s no need to put yourself under any extra pressure at this time of year, if you just don’t feel like you can handle it. Can’t be bothered with the crowds of Christmas shoppers? There’s plenty to be found online. Not got the time for turkey and all the trimmings? Don’t panic, there are plenty of (delicious) ready-made options too. Festive traditions are only worth keeping if you enjoy them - plus, remember that whatever you choose to do this year, doesn’t have to be forever.

Positives not perfection

In studies, those who practise gratitude have shown to have quieter, calmer brains and feel less stressed. Throughout the festive season it can be easy to feel like everything should be perfect - instead of focussing on perfection, try and look at positives. Write down the positives you are experiencing, including what you’re grateful for each morning. Doing this throughout the festive period and into 2023 will help to let go of your perfectionism, boost your mental health and increase your feelings of wellbeing.
