Nurturing Wellness: A Journey of Ukrainian Women in the UK

In the face of adversity, the resilience and strength of Ukrainian women has inspired women across the world. The challenges of leaving their friends, family and careers behind due to war, and relocating to new homes in foreign countries are incomprehensible for many of us.

As many Ukrainian women find themselves rebuilding their lives here in the UK, we have been speaking to the Trafalgar Girls, a platform created to help support women who have relocated to the UK, by helping them navigate cultural transitions, prioritise their nutrition and wellbeing, and build strong support networks in their temporary homes.

Here at Free Soul, we understand the importance of wellbeing in creating a happy and harmonious life. We wanted to learn more about the journeys of Ukrainian women relocating to the UK and share the incredible work of the Trafalgar Girls in supporting these incredible women with our community.

Adapting to a New Environment - Cultural Transition

Moving to a new country brings with it a number of challenges, particularly in adapting to a new culture. For Ukrainian women settling in the UK, navigating these cultural differences can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, there are numerous resources and support systems available to help ease this transition. From language classes to cultural organisations like Trafalgar Girls, Ukrainian women can find solace in connecting with others who understand their journey.

Nutrition and Wellbeing

Maintaining a balanced diet and prioritising wellbeing are essential components of a healthy lifestyle, particularly during times of transition. Ukrainian cuisine is renowned for its hearty and wholesome dishes, and while adjusting to life in the UK, Ukrainian women may seek to preserve their cultural preferences while exploring local food options. Embracing a diverse range of foods can not only enrich their culinary experience but also contribute to their overall wellbeing. By prioritising nutrition and embracing a balanced diet, Ukrainian women can nourish both body and soul as they embark on their wellness journey in the UK.

Building a Support Network

The importance of building a strong support network cannot be overstated. For Ukrainian women in the UK, making meaningful connections within their community can provide invaluable support and encouragement. Through shared experiences and mutual understanding, these connections can bring a sense of belonging and resilience.

Education and Skill Development

Empowering Ukrainian women in the UK involves providing them with opportunities for education and skill development. Whether through language classes or vocational training programs, acquiring new skills not only enhances their employability but also fosters a sense of confidence and independence. By investing in their education and professional development, Ukrainian women can unlock a world of possibilities and pursue their dreams with unwavering determination.

Learning New Languages

Language is a powerful tool for communication and connection. For Ukrainian women settling in the UK, learning the local language opens doors to new opportunities and facilitates integration into their adopted community. By embracing the challenge of learning a new language, Ukrainian women can bridge the cultural divides and create meaningful connections.

Finding Employment

Securing employment is a crucial step towards financial independence and self-sufficiency.

We spoke to 6 Ukrainian Women About Their Health & Wellbeing Since Moving to the UK

Kateryna - University Lecturer:

  • How has the process of adapting to a new culture and lifestyle in the UK been for you?
It’s not easy as it was not my choice to move to the UK. We are totally different mentally. But I do my best to adapt and take small steps.
  • How has the relocation affected your mental wellbeing, and what strategies have you found helpful in coping with the changes?
I try to make new contacts, learn English, travel around the country-all these helps me to stay stable.
  • What are your aspirations and wellness goals for the future?
To find a job according to my knowledge and experience.

Maryna - Unemployed:

  • How has the process of adapting to a new culture and lifestyle in the UK been for you?
The process was different in different periods: I was delighted with what I saw around me, and surprised by the kindness of the local people. There was a period of some disappointment, when I realised that my English language level was not enough for me to feel confident and at home here. After about 6 months of being in England, I began to miss Ukraine very much, and realised that perhaps we would not return home as soon as I had previously thought.
  • How has the relocation affected your mental wellbeing, and what strategies have you found helpful in coping with the changes?
With this understanding, there was a period of deep sadness, nothing made me happy. Until I understood for myself that I need to live and organise my life here and now.
  • Are there any community groups or organisations that have helped you build a support network in your new community?
For the first half of the year, from the moment of our arrival, we regularly met with other Ukrainian families. These meetings were organised by an English lady who was responsible for the arriving Ukrainians in this region. Already now we have our own connections with both Ukrainian families and communities and with English ones.

Poshtarenko - Banking:

  • How has the process of adapting to a new culture and lifestyle in the UK been for you?
It was not easy but very favourable. We have got a safe place to live, my son studies at a good school, I started working within a year of our arrival. We have met people with large kind hearts.
  • How has the relocation affected your mental wellbeing, and what strategies have you found helpful in coping with the changes?
It was not easy, as we left our home, parents, relatives and friends. I tried to find new friends here and to look only for positive moments.
  • Are there any community groups or organisations that have helped you build a support network in your new community?
Trafalgar Girls, Family for Peace, Smart work and others

Kyreitseva - Actress:

  • How has the process of adapting to a new culture and lifestyle in the UK been for you?
Not very easy, but I have some friends who've lived here nearly 20 years, they help a lot.
  • How has the relocation affected your mental wellbeing, and what strategies have you found helpful in coping with the changes?
It was helpful to understand that me and my children are now in a safe place and we have support here. Also I decided to do what was best for my kids in this horrible situation. Of course I have a few sessions with a psychologist and do sport and swimming to help to continue my wellbeing in the normal way I would in Ukraine.
  • Are there any community groups or organisations that have helped you build a support network in your new community?
I’ve helped a few of my friends come to the UK and now we have our small community. But a huge help was from my neighbour in our village. A lot of school parents help me with the kids. My church community has been very supportive.

Korepanova - Beauty:

  • How has the process of adapting to a new culture and lifestyle in the UK been for you?
I like my new place, so it has been easy, but very difficult to leave without my family.
  • What steps do you take to maintain your physical health and wellbeing in a new environment?
See a psychologist, meditation and gym.
  • What are your aspirations and wellness goals for the future?
Open a beauty salon and training centre here in the UK.

Nadiia - Front-end developer:

  • How has the process of adapting to a new culture and lifestyle in the UK been for you?
Not too bad, but it’s difficult to find friends. I still haven’t and feel very unhappy because of that.
  • How has the relocation affected your mental wellbeing, and what strategies have you found helpful in coping with the changes?
I become more calm, independent and strong. But alone.
  • How have your dietary habits changed since moving to the UK, and how do you incorporate Ukrainian cuisine into your daily meals?
I adapted very easily in this situation. I eat the same food as British people, plus soup sometimes and I found a Romanian store where I could buy buckwheat.
