IS GLUTEN THE ENEMY?

Supermarkets now have gluten-free isles and companies are creating more gluten-free options. Adopting a gluten-free diet has been a big health trend because of increasing awareness of how problematic gluten can be for some.

First, what is gluten?

Gluten is a combination of two proteins that are present in grains, most commonly found in wheat, barley, rye and spelt. It's the stuff that is responsible for the texture of dough that allows it to maintain its shape. Gluten is a mix of glutenin and gliadin, which is linked with starch.

Why gluten-free?

Gluten, for some, may cause gut inflammation because the human body can develop antibodies against gluten proteins (glutenin and gliadin). Some people may have a basic allergen reaction due to developed gluten sensitivity which may lead to a stomach bloating or general discomfort.

Those who need to avoid gluten altogether are those who have celiac disease. Celiac disease is an extremely severe gluten intolerance whereby gluten is completely indigestible. So much so that even consuming a small bite of bread can cause severe health problems.

A gluten-free diet?

Many people claim to feel better after adopting a gluten-free diet, despite not being allergic to gluten, and there may be several reasons for this.

Avoiding gluten would typically involve avoiding processed foods. Gluten is found in a wide array of highly processed food and drink such as fast food, baked goods, cereals, processed meats, many desserts, sauces and so on. Not only do these types of food contain gluten, but they are also high in calories, refined carbohydrates, refined sugar and unhealthy saturated fat.

Those adopting a gluten-free diet would look to other naturally gluten-free foods. This includes fruits and vegetables, unprocessed beans, seeds and nuts, and several different grains such as buckwheat, quinoa, rice and millet.

As a result of avoiding gluten-containing foods, it may leave many feeling lighter and less fatigued. This may be credited to the exclusion of unhealthy food and paying closer attention to what is being consumed rather than the avoidance of gluten itself. Replacing gluten-containing foods with healthier options may promote better digestive health and overall well-being.

Why gluten-free protein?

Our Free Soul protein blends are gluten-free. Getting enough protein is essential when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle.

A quality and premium protein powder is a convenient method for getting enough protein in your diet. Proteins are the building blocks of your body. They make up your muscles, even your hair and skin. It's essential to the way your body works.

Having a gluten-free protein powder, like the Free Soul Protein Blends (which are available in both whey and vegan) is a great way to get your protein in without having to consume gluten, which may help you avoid an upset stomach or gastric distress when consuming protein powders frequently.

Benefits of gluten-free protein

Allergy-free

A gluten-free and plant-based protein may be useful for those who suffer from allergies to whey which may cause gas or bloating. Plant-based protein is a great option for those who have gluten allergies or sensitivities. (ps - both our whey & vegan proteins are gluten free)

Fibre

Gluten-free protein powder is a great source of fibre. Fibre is made up of both insoluble and soluble fibres. And it's the soluble fibres that give your body the feeling of being fuller for longer. This is also hugely beneficial for a happy and healthy heart!

Metabolism

Increasing your protein intake helps to put your metabolism in gear. Due to all the fibre, it takes longer to digest protein, keeping you fuller for longer. And the longer it takes for your body to metabolise the protein you've consumed, the better your body gets at burning fat.

Vitamins and Minerals

Gluten-free and plant-based protein powder is a quick and easy way to get all the nutrients that your body needs for optimal function. Most of us won't have time to cook and prepare a full well-balanced meal, every meal of the day. Protein powder is a great way to supplement your diet with more vitamins and minerals, especially when additional vitamins have been blended in – such as in the Free Soul Protein range.

Helps To Avoid Processed Food

You certainly don't need to have a gluten intolerance to reap the benefits of gluten-free protein powder. By supplementing your diet with protein powder, you’re more likely to avoid unhealthy processed foods which make it easier for you to track your macros.

The takeaway

As long as protein powder, whether plant-based or not, is being supplemented correctly along with proper diet and exercise, you’re on track to achieve your fitness goals – without a careful eye on nutrition, it becomes very hard to achieve those goals, you know what they say: “You can’t out-train a bad diet”. Gluten-free protein powder is especially beneficial to help avoid an upset tummy or bloating.

The bottom line: for some, following a gluten-free diet is a necessity and for others, it’s a choice. The research continues to determine the relationship between gluten and overall health.

Gluten has been linked to autoimmune, digestive, and other health conditions for those who are gluten-intolerant. Therefore, since avoiding gluten poses no health risks, it may be worth trying to see if it may benefit your overall health and well-being.
